About Little Black Bear First Nation
A proud member of the File Hills Qu'Appelle Tribal Council, a Nêhiyaw and Nakoda community rooted in the File Hills of Saskatchewan
Our Name and Treaty: Our Cree name is ᑲᐢᑭᑌᐤ ᒪᐢᑿ ᒪᐢᑯᓯᐢ (kaskitêw-maskwa-maskosis), which matches the English name Little Black Bear, after our chief. Chief Kees kee hew mus-coo muskwa (Little Black Bear) signed Treaty 4 on September 15, 1874, and settled on the reserve surveyed for his band in the File Hills in 1880.
Population: Little Black Bear First Nation has a registered membership of 710 as of April 2025, with members living both on and off reserve.
Location: Our main reserve lies north-east of Regina, about 19 kilometres east of Fort Qu'Appelle and approximately 23 kilometres north of Balcarres, then 9 kilometres east. Our band office is in Goodeve, Saskatchewan.
Culture and Economy: Our tipi logo symbolizes shelter, protection and community, and its points stand for the children, adults and Elders. Our members have farmed since settling on reserve, and today we are expanding organic farming and building an aquaponics facility with Muscowpetung that could produce up to 125 metric tonnes of fresh Steelhead (rainbow trout) a year, plus vegetables.
